Q & A

Question & Answer Session

Question 3

Lucy from ?, Age ? asked "Do all sharks attack humans?"
Great Question!!
The quick answer is NO :
- There are No sharks that eat humans as part of their natural diet

- A few species of shark have attacked humans without provocation, usually a case of mistaken identity e.g. most attacks on humans are by great white sharks attacking surfers, from below they look like seals (their food).

- Even then almost all shark attacks are "non consumptive attacks" this means once bitten the people don't get eaten, we don't taste like shark's natural food.

- Occasionally though there are attacks when people are eaten, sometimes by tiger sharks and sometimes by sharks in open water like Oceanic white tips on survivors in the water - A living in open water is like a desert, people in the water after an accident or disaster (like when the USS Indianopolis was torpedoed by the Japanese in WWII) who are sick and injured and dying look like food to the sharks, whose job it is to clean the seas up and scavenge for food.

So the answer is out of 450 species of sharks only about 30 are considered dangerous, others are considered potentially dangerous (just like seals are potentially dangerous because they're big and have teeth), however attacks on humans are VERY rare.
Most attacks are provoked e.g. a shark with a large number of attacks on humans is the nurse shark, this is because they lie and sleep on the reef and are quite docile, so some silly divers will grab them by the tail and try to handle them for photos, even a lapdog will bite if you pull its tail!! These sharks can often be found in petting tanks in aquariums because if handled gently they're quite friendly. Many species of shark are actually very cute!
I will write this up into a page on my Q&A page, which country are you from and how old are you ? So I can put it in the question.

Hope you've enjoyed SharkyJones, keep looking back there is more coming all the time, including a short film I've made that answers your question, more cartoons, animations etc.
