The story behind the photos.

In 1996 I was lucky enough to go on an expedition to the Bahamas and spent about 4 weeks in the Bahamas at the Bimini Biological Field Station with Doctor Sonny Gruber, a renowned Shark Scientist.

We spent time setting nets to capute baby lemon sharks. These would then be taken to the middle of the lagoon where we had built a holding pen. The sharks were then weighed, measured and tagged.

The baby sharks were then released into the holding pen which we'd made with bars hammered into the sand, orange plastic netting used for roadworks and electric cable ties. We'd then feed the sharks for a couple of days to recover and make sure we'd captured most of the sharks in an area, then we'd release them.

I took these photos from outside and inside the pen.

Once an adult got into the pen during a high tide. We had to go in and get it out, which was OK, the shark was tied up and imobile with no real trouble, but even a safe shark you have to watch its teeth. The fellow above is a shark researcher, I was standing by him at the sharks head as it shook its head, his hand was a little close and its teeth scraped his hand - 27 stitches, I gave the first aid. He was back the next day tagging more sharks.
